Behind the Cloud: The Untold Story of How Salesforce.com Went from Idea to Billion-Dollar Company-and Revolutionized an Industry ReviewA CEO business book which doesn't follow the tired Gilda Radner formula of `Enough of me talking about me...let's hear what others think about me!'. This is a fun to read book chock-full of no-holds-barred advice on everything a growth company faces. In short easy to read chapters, Benioff writes instructively about everything from fostering an innovative product development and marketing machine, to driving explosive sales in existent and new/emerging markets, to focusing on customers while simultaneously inspiring a culture of employee hyper-success. His chapters on giving back to the community should be standard reading at all business schools today. In short, this is a practical guide on how to grow a successful business without selling your soul to Mephistopheles. The enthusiasm infused in the writing is contagious. For those looking for MBA jargon, four quadrant charts, circles with arrows, new buzzwords, or formulaic bromides on business success brought about by `the cult of the leader', don't pick up this book. Benioff and Adler have penned an easy to read practical, no-nonsense step-by-step `how to' guidebook on building and running a great company. The Art & Science of JavaScript ReviewThis is a very interesting book for anyone who is interested in going to the 'next level' of JavaScript. It's not a book for absolute beginners, but everything is very well explained without wasting time on trivia.
The chapter on metaprogramming (self-modifying code) is my favourite. Not only because it presents some very useful ideas, but also because it finally made me understand how JavaScript does certain things under the bonnet.
James Edward's Maze game is nothing short of a-maze-ing. It's a fine example of what you can do if you have the ability to think outside the box. (Way outside, in this case!)
The only negative part is the first chapter. Not because it's not useful -- it is! -- and not because it's badly written -- it isn't. The reason is that the code samples use XHTML markup but the JavaScript code will not work if that markup is served as real XHTML. The JavaScript relies on the HTML DOM, e.g., that nodeName properties are returned in uppercase. The use of character entity references is also ill-advised for XHTML.
Unfortunately, there isn't any informtion about this in the text. Someone who isn't well-versed in the fundamental differences between HTML and XHTML would learn some harmful practices.
The sad part is that it would have been so easy to write the JavaScript in a way that would have worked in both the HTML DOM and the XML DOM.
The remainder of the book contains good code examples which don't sacrifice accessibility.
Having said that, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to use JavaScript for something other than validating form input. The Art & Science of JavaScript Overview

Pro Android 2 ReviewPro Android 2 is aimed at developers who want to take Android to the next level. This large book serves as a manual for how to do almost anything on Android. The book starts by giving a refresher of the platform, and then quickly dives into explaining XML files, GUI layout and Views, and working with mapping. Building and consuming services are explained, giving the first example of working with Apache's HttpClient libs that I have seen in an Android book. Examples of working with the Telephony API, searching, using gestures, you name it. The book even offers an alternative way of creating applications using Titanium Mobile. Finally time is spent explaining the Android Marketplace and things you should know before making your application public.
The information contained in this book is at the same time enlightening and overwhelming. In just the first few chapters, I had already found better ways to handle several things in my own Android applications. That alone was worth the time spent reading this book.
Although the book was written by three different authors, I found the writing style and flow of the book well done and congruous.
The book explains that the intended audience should have previous exposure to developing on the Android platform and to Java, and they mean it. While an introduction is given to the various parts of an Android application, a new developer wouldn't be able to get enough understanding to use this book as a starting point for developing Android applications. Previous exposure to any number of beginning Android books is recommended before you attempt to tackle this one. The publisher suggest you start with Beginning Android 2.
If you are an Android developer, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. If you spend 2 minutes flipping through the various chapters, I promise you will walk out of the book store with Pro Android 2 in hand. My rating, 5 stars. The book delivers exactly what it advertises and does so in a manner that is enjoyable to read and very helpful.

Search User Interfaces ReviewThis book is a survey of recent work in search, but with an unusual focus on the importance of interface design on searcher's perceptions of the quality and usefulness of search results.
It is an excellent supplement to core search texts such as Introduction to Information Retrieval (Manning et al., 2008) which focus on the backend technology behind search. Search User Interfaces focuses more on the how we search, what we expect to see when we search, different interfaces that have been tried in the past, and which of those people found useful.
More specifically, the author starts by looking at why Google and other search engines have such a spartan design, explaining that searchers find it most helpful when distractions are minimized and it is quick and easy to iterate on searches. She goes on to lay a foundation by looking at the many models for how people search, including an exploration of the information foraging model where searchers partially satisfy some goals while rapidly developing new goals as they are exposed to new information. She offers hints on techniques that have worked well (e.g. immediately showing search results, keywords-in-context in the snippets, diversity of results on ambiguous queries, biasing results based on query term order and proximity, the importance of seemingly minor design tweaks, just to name a few). She dismisses more complicated interfaces such as boolean queries, thumbnails of result pages, clustering, pseudo-relevance feedback, explicit personalization, and visualizations of query refinements and search results, saying that they showed poor results in the past. She holds out hope for faceted search, universal search, and implicit personalization.
I enjoyed the way this book usefully points at techniques which have shown promise while dismissing others as consistently confusing to users. It is a guide to what works and what does not in search, warning of paths that likely lead into the weeds and pointing to better opportunities.Search User Interfaces Overview

Web 2.0 Architectures: What Entrepreneurs and Information Architects Need to Know ReviewThe term "software system architecture" means many things to many people. Coders look at the microcosm. Systems engineers look at the macrocosm. By nature, writing about the software system architecture is hard. Most times no one size is going to fit all.
Thus, I am always apprehensive about a book that purports to explain software system architecture in general. Usually such books are written by highfalutin Big Six consultants for the benefit of entrenched IT managers that need to be "in the know". In most cases neither party has the aptitude or real world technical background to grasp the technical topic at hand in a manner that is useful and accurate. As a result, because neither writer nor readers are real world, the book flops.
So here's the good news. O'Reilly's Web 2.0 Architectures does a more than competent job of explaining Web 2.0 enterprise system architecture. The book takes a real world approach. The first two chapters are a primer in the basics of the Internet and Web 2.0 based software systems. In the primer sections you'll learn about the fundamental technology static and various architectural patterns that make up web based enterprise systems: Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Software as a Service (SaaS), Participation-Collaboration, Mash up, Semantic Web Grounding, to name a few.
Then in Chapter 3 the authors frame real world, web based systems such as AdSense, Flickr, BitTorrent,etc..., against architectural concepts, comparing older systems against the newer Web 2.0 counterparts, DoubleClick vs. AdSense, for example.
The writers consider the ability to think and conceptualize in terms of structured abstraction as the primary tool in the architect's toolkit. Thus, Chapter 4, 5 and 6 get you thinking in terms of Models and Patterns.
Chapter 7 serves as Web 2.0 reference/lexicon and Chapter 8 provides the call to action for creating Web 2.0 architectures that last.
After reading this book will you be able to get a job at Amazon designing its next generation Movies on Demand web service? The answer is no. It takes years of experience and some very expensive failures to understand the intricacies of designing and implementing a system of such enormity.
Will you have a formalized understanding of the thinking, patterns and implementations that surround modern Internet based software systems? Yes, by all means.
In terms of the nuts and bolts of the book, there are pros and cons. The book is short. This is good. You can read it in about 4 hours. The conventions used are clear and the writing style is engaging. There is ample reference to online links. Thus, for ease of use, you'll do well to read the book in the online Safari version.
One of the drawbacks of the book is that at times, the book introduces some pretty hard core technologies and then lends fleeting reference once introduced. For example, the book devotes a single paragraph to introducing the concept of the Enterprise Service Bus. Those of us that have worked with the ESB know that it is an ornery technology that comes with a considerable learning curve, and more considerable implementation curve. Yet the book glosses over it. However, such hit and run tactics are limited.
Overall, I found this book useful. If nothing else, it wrapped formal language around concepts that I have been carrying in my head for years. And, once the reseller discounts kick in, the price is right!
I definitely recommend this book as a common reference for any team of developers making modern enterprise level software.
