Google+: The Missing Manual ReviewNever got an invite to Google+, the latest (and greatest?) social networking site? No matter. You no longer need one as anyone can join. However, if you want to get up to speed fast you may need a helpful guide book like "Google+: the Missing Manual."The Missing Manual series by Pogue Press/O'Reilly Media may be the best around for the average user to learn new technology. The Manuals are almost always well organized and written, comprehensive, and well produced. The author of this Manual, Kevin Purdy, does a good job covering the basics of Google+-how to sign in and create a profile; how to set up "circles" of friends and designated contact groups; how to view, write, and edit posts; and more.
This is a slim volume of only 211 pages (with index) with 9 chapters covering mostly everything one needs to know to use Google+ well for fun, business, and communicating with others. The writing is straight to the point without jargon. The longest chapters are on sharing photos and videos and using Google+ with mobile devices. The mobile related discussions covering android, iPhone, and Windows mobile systems. Other chapters cover managing streams, notifications, and a Google exclusive-Hangouts-allowing up to 10 people to share a video chat.
The book is generously filled with grayscale screenshots and a variety of sidebars (Tips, Notes, Faqs, Gems in the Rough) although the layout is often cluttered with too much different material making some pages hard to read and comprehend. Several side-by-side pages, for example, include up to 3 screenshots, 3 sidebars, 3 or more layers of captions, plus associated text.
There is plenty of good information, however. Mr. Purdy's attempts to mimic the well-defined template of the Missing Manual series fails a bit in that he doesn't include enough practical tips, his humor is mostly cheesy, and the exposition is a bit dry. He does take lengths to point out the privacy issues in all of the Google+features. Like with Facebook and Twitter, using Google+ is not for those private folks who don't want their posts, photos, location, and lives, inadvertently stored permanently on searchable databases available to nearly everyone on the planet.
