Annabel Scheme ReviewThere really should be a term for writers who Know What's Up, technologically speaking. Mr. Sloan is a fantastically inventive individual, and his first novel -- a breakneck romp through an alternate San Francisco -- stands out as one of the best new works I've read this year.If you like Neal Stephenson, Charlie Stross, or Cory Doctorow, if you like up-to-the-minute fiction rich with ideas that make you go "whoa," ANNABEL SCHEME delivers. In spades. Plus, it features the best first page I've ever seen; for the first time ever, I bought a Kindle book after only one sample page. You'll know what I mean.
If you're not convinced yet, the book is available on Mr. Sloan's site as a Creative Commons download. Buy the book, though. It's worth supporting authors like these.
See you in World of Jesus. I'll be in line for the falafel.
Annabel Scheme OverviewAnnabel Scheme is a detective story set in an alternate San Francisco where the digital and the occult live side-by-side. It's a short, snappy read -- about 128 pages/128,000 Kindle locations -- and perfect for people who like Sherlock Holmes, Douglas Adams, ghosts and/or the internet. Finally, it makes a great Kindle gift.In Scheme's San Francisco, an indie rocker's new tracks are climbing the charts, even though the rocker herself is long dead. A devout gamer has gone missing, and the only trace of him that remains is inside his favorite game, the blockbuster MMORPG called World of Jesus. And the richest man in the city, the inventor of the search engine called Grail, might just have made a deal with a devil.Meanwhile, Annabel Scheme has just hired herself a Watson, an A.I. assistant who's now learning the ropes on a case that will quickly transform into Scheme's biggest -- and possibly her last.Come on. Fog City is waiting.== Praise for the author =="While Bruce Sterling and Cory Doctorow and Vernor Vinge fantasize about the Singularity or augmented reality or 3D printers that can reproduce themselves [...] Sloan is writing a fiction that speaks to a world in which we find ourselves not exactly emancipated by technology but simply hyper-connected by it, our identities as people redefined by the media we share, media which we embrace and deeply care about even when it leaves us bewildered, co-opted, and reduced in a thousand ways to algorithms. It isn't 'hard' Science Fiction, not by a long shot, but most 'hard' SF long ago stopped being able to figure out how to be relevant to most readers (as can be seen by their sales figures), with its greatest practitioners, William Gibson and Neal Stephenson, turning instead to the present day, on the one hand, and history and alternate history, on the other. Sloan, however, has found an entirely different and exciting avenue of attack." Praise for previous work ==Here's what some Amazon reviewers had to say about other stories:"In my book, 5 stars are reserved for works that you carry around in your mind even when you've finished reading them. This short story qualifies.""Tightly wound mystery/fantasy plot. Wonderful characters given just enough flesh to leave your imagination room to play. An unbroken string of sentences that charm. And it's drink-snortingly funny."== About the author ==Robin Sloan grew up in Michigan and now splits his time between San Francisco and the internet. You can follow along at @robinsloan.
