Google for Seniors: Get Acquainted with Free Google Applications: Google Earth, Maps, Reader, Docs, Sites, Chrome (Computer Books for Seniors series) ReviewI do NOT recommend reading this book. It has numerous faults, including: font size in screen images is too small, and the screen images have poor contrast. The page design includes extraneous graphics. For example, when we are to type something in a field, the book provides a callout to the word "Type" plus an image of a keyboard. When we are to click on something, the book gives us an image of a mouse. The keyboard and mouse images are visual clutter.
The book is sometimes wrong. On p. 21 it says to click the Back arrow to open the first hit in a Google search. Nope!
The book ssys nothing about sponsored links. Instead, the first hit is described as "the most important" (p. 21 top).
The book starts out assuming that Internet Explorer is your web browser. Later it introduces Chrome.
There are signs of a lack of careful editing. For example, sentences and ideas are sometimes in an illogical order. For example, the first paragraph at the top of p. 271 is: "The first time you open Picasa, the program will search your computer for images. On your desktop you will see a new shortcut to Picasa. Click the icon to open the program." Wait. First I find Picasa's desktop icon (in the book the picture of this icon is blurry with a medium gray background and looks nothing like Picasa's bright, attractive desktop icon). Then I double-click the icon. Then Picasa offers two options for searching the computer for images.
On the plus side, the "Please Note" box at the bottom of page 271 is well-written and gives good guidance. This and a few other useful bits of information earned this book 2 stars instead of 1.Google for Seniors: Get Acquainted with Free Google Applications: Google Earth, Maps, Reader, Docs, Sites, Chrome (Computer Books for Seniors series) Overview
