Sams Teach Yourself Android Application Development in 24 Hours (2nd Edition) (Sams Teach Yourself -- Hours) ReviewThere are a lot of different computer programmers out there with very different skill, talent, and experience levels, so no one book is best for everyone. This book is a pretty good introduction for someone who already has a lot of computer programming experience, but who wants to learn Android. If you are not already familiar with object-oriented programming and the Java programming language, then you need to study those before starting with Android. If you do already have Java experience (e.g. building interactive web sites), then you should be able to breeze through this book.
I like that the book is divided into 24 lessons, each needing about one hour of your time. This pacing lets you schedule your "lessons" and you can easily jump around to cover the subjects that are most useful to your projects.
Despite the 2012 copyright date, this book focuses on Android versions 2.3 and 3.0. Android 4.0 is already available with lots of new features that are not covered in this book. Still, most Android devices do not have Android 4.0 yet, so you would be wise to optimize your apps for the older platforms at least for a little while.
